In a recent announcement, Town Attorney John Cafferky has indicated his intention to resign, with the effective date to be determined pending the town’s decision on a replacement. Cafferky submitted a letter of resignation to be effective at the time Purcellville successfully contracts and/or hires replacement legal representation. This leaves the Purcellville Town Council with an important decision ahead: whether to hire an in-house staff attorney or engage a legal counsel firm for future representation.

Cafferky, a partner at the law firm Blankingship and Keith, has served as Town Attorney on a contractual basis since April 12, 2023. He stepped into the role following the resignation of Sally Hankins, who held the position for a decade as a full-time town employee. With experience in education law, Cafferky has focused on defending public, charter, and private schools since 1986. His background includes acting as general counsel to several Northern Virginia school boards and providing legal advice on various topics related to public school operations.

While the town council deliberates on the path forward, the decision between hiring an in-house attorney or retaining a legal counsel firm could significantly impact the town’s legal representation and expenses. The council will be discussing these options in upcoming meetings, considering both the logistical and financial implications of each choice.
