A passionate group of residents and small business owners in Purcellville have come together to form a Facebook group called Purcellville Main Street, dedicated to the revitalization of our beloved town. This initiative marks a significant step forward in enhancing the community’s vibrancy and economic vitality.

The Virginia Main Street organization is a nonprofit that plays a vital role in assisting towns like Purcellville in charting the way for revitalization. This movement is not only community-driven and funded but also opens up a wealth of grant opportunities that can benefit both the town and local businesses.

Main Street organizations are led by community members who are eager to make a difference. They offer a wealth of resources and support, and we are excited to embark on a journey that is long overdue for our town. Since its inception in 1985, the Virginia Main Street (VMS) program has been at the forefront of fostering successful and enduring community revitalization, utilizing the National Main Street Center’s (NMSC) proven Main Street Approach.

Currently housed under the Virginia Department of Housing and Community Development’s (DHCD) Community Vitality Office (CVO), VMS integrates seamlessly with the agency’s broader efforts to promote healthy, vibrant, and sustainable downtowns and business districts across the Commonwealth.

As a Main Street America State Coordinating Program, VMS provides a variety of services and assistance to communities looking to revitalize their historic commercial districts. While the program was initially designed for smaller to mid-sized downtowns, the principles of the Main Street Approach can be effectively applied in various commercial settings.

One of the key benefits of the Main Street program is the improvement of relationships within the community. A strong downtown community positively impacts the business community as a whole, fostering collaboration and support among local entrepreneurs. The Main Street program embraces the goodness that comes from these connections, creating a network of thriving businesses that uplift one another.

The path to advancing through the different tiers of the Main Street program is not linear; there is no set timeline to complete various levels, as it is tailored to each town’s specific needs and circumstances. This flexibility allows Purcellville to adapt the program to best suit our community’s unique character and goals.

The Main Street Approach offers a flexible framework that leverages the unique assets of downtown areas, such as distinctive architecture and locally-owned businesses, to serve as catalysts for economic growth and community pride. Like many communities across the nation, VMS towns have successfully adopted this time-tested approach, embracing a comprehensive and incremental strategy for revitalization that addresses the complex and evolving challenges facing downtown business environments while stimulating long-term economic growth and pride in our traditional community centers.
