April 10, 2025 – Loudoun County, VA

In a significant move reflecting the commitment to transparency and ethical governance, the Coalition of Loudoun Towns (COLT) has announced the suspension of Mayor Chris Bertaut from COLT, effective immediately. This decision comes in response to allegations of ethically questionable practices attributed to the mayor, which encompass serious violations of Virginia state laws—including the Virginia Freedom of Information Act (FOIA), conflict of interest statutes, and open meeting laws.

COLT, a collective representing the interests of various towns within Loudoun County, has emphasized the importance of accountability and integrity in public service. In a statement released today, the coalition asserted that Mayor Bertaut’s recent conduct fell short of the legal and ethical standards expected from public officials. The coalition clarified that the suspension was not influenced by Mayor Bertaut’s policy decisions regarding the Town of Purcellville. Instead, the action stems from concerns about the processes and methods employed by the mayor and his administration in making these decisions.

“Accountability, integrity, transparency, and compliance with the law are the cornerstones of public service,” stated Kelly Burk, Mayor of the Town of Leesburg and a member of COLT. “We believe strongly in the oath we all take to uphold the rule of law and demonstrate ethical leadership across all Loudoun County municipalities. Our actions aim to reinforce these values.”

Other local leaders, including Bridge Littleton, Mayor of the Town of Middleburg; Ken Wine, Mayor of the Town of Hamilton; Chris Hornbaker, Mayor of the Town of Lovettsville; Scott Ramsey, Mayor of the Town of Round Hill; and Roger Vance, Mayor of the Town of Hillsboro, voiced their support for the suspension, highlighting the importance of adhering to established rules and regulations in governance.

In light of this suspension, Purcellville faces a challenging period ahead, with the community keenly observing efforts to restore confidence in its elected officials. The suspension of Mayor Bertaut serves as a reminder of the perpetual need for vigilance in upholding ethical standards within local government.

More updates will follow as this story develops, particularly as the Town Council addresses the pressing issues of ethical accountability and transparency. Community members are encouraged to engage in the ongoing discourse surrounding governance and the responsibilities of their elected leaders.
