In a proud and exciting development for the Purcellville community, local star Quintan Kilrain has been named to the prestigious United States U20 Lacrosse Team. A rising junior and two-year starter at Johns Hopkins University, Kilrain joins a select group of 22 players set to compete in the 2025 Under-20 Men’s Lacrosse World Championships on Jeju Island, Korea, from August 15-24.
Kilrain, a formidable defenseman, is one of only five defensemen to make the team, reflecting his exceptional skills and contributions on the field. Guided by head coach Shawn Nadelen, a Johns Hopkins alumnus and former All-American defenseman, the U.S. team is well-prepared to defend its winning legacy. Since 1988, this biennial event has seen 21 Johns Hopkins players, including Kilrain, proudly represent Team USA.
During his first two seasons at Johns Hopkins, Kilrain played in all 30 games with 26 starts, showcasing his talent and resilience. His statistics include two goals, three assists, 61 ground balls, and 22 caused turnovers, marking him as a key player on the defense. In the 2025 season alone, Kilrain demonstrated unparalleled consistency with 28 ground balls and 11 caused turnovers, starting all 14 games on close defense. Alongside his athletic prowess, he excels academically, majoring in political science and earning a spot on the 2025 Academic All-Big Ten Team.
The Under-20 Men’s Lacrosse World Championships in Korea promise to be a thrilling event, with Kilrain and his teammates opening their campaign on August 16 against an enduring rival, Canada. Subsequent pool play games will see them face off against Australia and the Haudenosaunee, with all four participants from Pool A advancing to the quarterfinals on August 21. The championship culminates in the gold medal game on August 24, where Team USA hopes to add to its impressive record of nine previous victories, including the most recent 12-10 win against Canada in 2022, held in Limerick, Ireland.
This year’s competition holds additional significance as it’s the first time the event returns to Asia since 1996, when the U.S. U19 team triumphed over Australia in Tokyo. Kilrain’s participation exemplifies his dedication and the strong athletic foundation laid in Purcellville, where he honed his skills at Ken Colbert and Blue Ridge Middle School.
The Purcellville community eagerly anticipates Kilrain’s performance on the international stage. His journey is an inspiring testament to the town’s nurturing of talent and the far-reaching potential of local athletes.
