A significant traffic pattern change will take effect Tuesday, July 14, at the intersection of Route 9 (Charles Town Pike) and Route 287 (Berlin Turnpike) as construction continues on a new roundabout at the western Loudoun County crossroads, according to an announcement from Loudoun County.

The new pattern will shift the intersection southeast of its current configuration, the county said. On Route 9, eastbound traffic will shift to the right and westbound traffic will shift to the left. The existing eastbound lane closure on Route 9 will remain in place. On Route 287, northbound traffic will shift to the right and southbound traffic will shift to the left.

Motorists should expect delays as drivers adjust to the new configuration, according to the county. Flaggers will be stationed at the intersection to help guide vehicles safely through the work zone.

The shifted pattern will remain in place until the project is complete, currently estimated for summer 2027.

The county advised drivers to use caution in the area and to follow all posted construction signage and instructions. Periodic temporary lane closures, additional shifts and flagging operations may occur near the site, and residents walking or biking nearby should use extra care. Construction areas will be clearly marked, and the public is asked not to enter the site or cross construction fencing or barriers. The county said any significant traffic impacts or changes in access will be communicated in advance when possible.

About the Project

The project will replace the existing signalized intersection with a roundabout at Route 9 and Route 287, along with widened roadway approaches. When complete, the county said, the improvements are expected to significantly reduce traffic congestion, improve safety and provide a long-term, cost-effective solution for future roadway operation and maintenance.
