The Loudoun County Board of Supervisors Finance Committee has approved the design endorsement for the planned Western Loudoun Recreation Complex, moving the long-anticipated project another step forward for residents in the western part of the county.

The proposed complex would be located between Round Hill and Purcellville, just south of Route 7, on a large site identified for regional recreation use. County officials say the project is intended to expand recreational opportunities in western Loudoun, where population growth has increased demand for athletic facilities, community space, and indoor recreation options.

The concept presented to the Board outlines a large recreation campus that would combine both indoor and outdoor amenities. Outdoors, the plan includes four baseball or softball fields and four soccer or multi-use fields, along with sports courts for pickleball, tennis, and basketball. The site would also include a playground, picnic shelters, an off-leash dog area, natural walking trails, and a multipurpose lawn area designed for community use.

At the center of the project would be a large indoor recreation building offering a range of programs and activities. Current plans call for a gymnasium, fitness center, indoor running or walking track, and an aquatics center featuring a 37.5-meter competition pool as well as a leisure pool, splash play area, and spa. Spectator seating would allow the facility to host swim events, while multipurpose rooms, a kitchen space, and program areas would support classes and community activities. The building design also includes locker rooms, administrative offices, and dedicated teen program areas.

Planning documents also identify space within the site for a future Loudoun County library, allowing the possibility of a combined recreation and library campus that could serve as a community hub for western Loudoun.

County staff noted that the site layout was developed with existing environmental conditions in mind, including wetlands, slopes, and natural drainage areas that shape where facilities can be placed on the property.

The Board’s endorsement of the design concept allows the project to continue moving through additional design and planning phases before construction decisions are finalized. The construction timeline for the recreation complex is estimated to begin in the fall of 2026 and be completed in 2028. This development will make it one of the largest county recreational facilities in the western Loudoun region.
